With great pleasure we teamed up with Green Homes Queenstown to produce one of the best performing show homes in the South Island.

Some fantastic photos by @larkin_photography of our completed high performance project with @greenhomesqueenstown! Together with the GHQ owner, we set a vision of creating something high quality and high performing, and stayed true to it from concept to completion.

In response to the strict site constraints and covenant design guidelines, a simple form consisting of a prominent gable sitting on an elegant base was decided on early in the concept design. Internally an efficient and functional layout for the 3-bed, 2.5 bath main house and the attached residential flat, creates a spacious, comfortable home.

The material choices are simple but robust. Sustainably sourced, horizontal timber weatherboards wrap around the ground floor providing a warm and elegant base, while low maintenance, profiled metal cladding enhances the gable form above. Every window and door is carefully positioned and sized to optimise the visual connection with the surrounding landscape, and the magnificent peaks around Wakatipu Basin.

The architecture and interior design conceal hidden treasures. This house is designed and built to align with the Homestar V5 6* standard from @nzgbc. With an R4.0 fully insulated slab, R4.4 walls, and an R6.2 roof, the thermal envelope far exceeds minimum code standards to ensure a year-round comfortable interior, and reduced energy costs. High performance uPVC windows with Low-E, argon filled glazing reduce the noise from the neighbouring busy road, while also ensuring thermal comfort in Queenstown’s harsh winters and summers. A central heat recovery ventilation system with a ducted heat pump completes the picture, to provide constant fresh air alongside extremely efficient heating and cooling. This building will provide a comfortable, durable, low energy, and healthy home for years to come!
